The wedding photography shot list worth writing

Bride and groom kissing with the sea behind them at Sola Beach

Every couple is told to write a shot list, and most of them write the wrong one. A hundred lines copied from the internet turns a photographer into an assistant working through a spreadsheet instead of watching your day.

There is a version of the list that helps enormously. It is short, it is specific to your family and your venue, and it covers the things nobody else in the room can tell us.

Write down the family groupings

This is the part of the list that matters most, and the only part we genuinely cannot improvise. Name the combinations you want, in the order you want them called, and keep it to the groups you will actually print or send to relatives.

Nominate one confident person from each side who knows the faces and can gather people quickly. That single decision usually keeps family photographs to twenty minutes rather than fifty.

Write down what carries meaning

  • Jewellery, a watch or a veil that belonged to someone in the family.
  • A letter, a vow book or a gift exchanged in the morning.
  • A guest who has travelled a long way, or a grandparent whose portrait you want made properly.
  • A tradition specific to your family, your church or your region.
  • A location on the property you fell in love with when you booked it.

What you do not need to list

The first kiss, the rings going on, the speeches, the first dance, the laughter at the table. These are the spine of every wedding we photograph and they are covered without being asked for.

Listing them does not make them more certain. It only pulls attention away from the moments that are unique to you.

Share it early, not on the morning

Send the list a few weeks before the wedding so it can be built into the timeline. A grouping that needs three relatives who are staying an hour away is a scheduling question, not a photography question, and it is easily solved with notice.

On the day itself, put the list in the hands of your nominated person and then forget it exists. That is when the photographs start looking like the day rather than the plan.
